Children are the future of our society, and it is therefore necessary to empower them to be(come) active citizens. News can contribute to this, because it informs about significant events happening in the world and can stimulate democratic practices, such as civic participation and prosocial behavior. To get younger generations more involved with news, I believe that is it important to investigate how children can learn to cope with the predominantly negative nature of news.
Dr. Mariska Kleemans is an associate professor in the Behavioural Science Institute at the Radboud University, Nijmegen. In her research, Mariska aims to answer the question how the relationship between children and the news can be improved, in order to best prepare them for their (future) role in society. In her teaching, Mariska is educational director of Communication Science at Radboud University.
